The Quatercentenary Edition brings together in 14 volumes all the surviving sacred music of Giovanni Croce. Sought out by the future Kaiser Ferdinand II and by John Dowland, praised by musicians and patrons, Croce was a major figure in the Venetian music scene in the second half of the 16th century. His output includes a vast amount of double-choir music, including three masses, two books of motets and sets of music for Terce, Vespers and Compline. Besides this there are collections of 4-voice ad equales motets, 5-voice Cantiones Sacrae, two sets of Lamentations, masses for 5 and 6 voices (and one for four choirs), two Requiems and much more besides.

The Edition is produced by a strong international team. Consulting Editors are Prof. Richard Charteris (Sydney, Australia), Editor of the Complete Giovanni Gabrieli and many other Collected Editions; and Martin Morell (New York, USA), the scholar who identified the birth date of Andrea Gabrieli, and who has written a new biography of Croce for the Edition; and Managing Editor Michael Procter (Weingarten, Germany) whose work in Renaissance sacred music includes not only some 800 editions but also recordings, performances, courses and workshops in many parts of Europe.

With regret, we announce that following the sad death of Michael Procter in May 2012, the Croce Quatercentenary Edition cannot be completed. Of the fourteen volumes that Michael planned, volumes I, II, VIII and XIII are complete. Volumes III, IV, V, VI, VII, IX and XIV will be abandoned.
